My interest in birds of prey started in junior high school while exploring the wilds behind my house. As my interest grew my bedroom walls became decorated with torn out magazine photos of hawks, eagles, falcons and owls. After reading John and Frank Craighead's book "Hawks in the Hand" I became interested in wildlife photography. The Craighead's were the pioneers of photographing birds of prey that captured their wild "spirit", something I wanted my photos to convey. Not content with images of captive birds or staged imagery which is prevalent today, I became a student of nature which has led to the images you see here.
My work has been published in National Wildlife and Living Bird Magazines, numerous newspapers and books, both in the United States and Europe, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, the USDA, the Peregrine Fund and even the Grateful Dead! And some of my video work was used recently by CNN. You will find many of my images on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's "Birds of North America" website, the Raptor Research Foundation website, the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group website, the London Peregrine Partnership website and Coastal Raptors website. In 2008 I worked with two good friends, Kate Davis and Rob Palmer, to publish the book "Falcons of North America". In 2011, the three of us published another book titled "Raptors of the West" which won honors for Artistic Merit and Design from the National Outdoor Book Awards and the Montana Book of the Year!
